Some of the products shown have previously appeared in content from real creators before being appropriated.
The storefront links and product sourcing raise red flags
Accounts tied to these videos link to suspicious online storefronts, including one advertising multiple “five-star reviews” that all use identical filler text. One crochet bag design shown in the AI videos was found for sale on Shein, a platform used by dropshippers that operate online storefronts without keeping physical inventory. AFP also found that some pottery products were taken from earlier posts by real creators.
The impact is that real entrepreneurs lose attention and sales
Rowe said the AI content can “crowd-out” posts from actual entrepreneurs with Down syndrome, meaning business is potentially redirected to the scam accounts. He pointed to the narrative effect as well, saying it reinforces the idea that people with Down syndrome cannot make things and that it must be AI. Advocates and researchers argue this perpetuates negative stereotypes while harming the lives and businesses of real individuals.
The trend extends beyond Down syndrome and is hard to track
This is not the first such trend; Down Syndrome International previously reported sexualized deep-fakes of people with Down syndrome to Meta, which led to removal of many videos. Social media platforms are urged to be more proactive, and TikTok’s guidelines ban deceptive or manipulative activity as well as discrimination, while YouTube has policies against misleading spam. Jeremy Carrasco, co-founder of Riddance, said the scheme has expanded because AI videos are easy to generate and difficult to track, and he noted similar scams using elderly synthetic characters to sell identical products.
