According to a survey conducted in mid-2013, a higher percentage of Malaysian respondents admitted to taking items from hotel rooms compared to the global average. Common Items Taken by Malaysian Travellers

Toiletries, such as shampoos, soaps, and conditioners, were the most frequently admitted stolen items among Malaysian respondents, with 45 per cent confessing to taking them. Following toiletries, tea and coffee supplies, along with stationery, were also popular choices for guests to take from hotel rooms. The survey also indicated a tendency for guests to take larger items, with 2 per cent admitting to taking clothes hangers, and some even taking ashtrays, light bulbs, and batteries.
Discrepancies Between Guest Admissions and Hotelier Reports

While many guests admitted to taking smaller items, there were notable differences between what travellers confessed to taking and what hoteliers reported missing. For instance, only 7 per cent of guests admitted to taking towels, yet 12 per cent of hoteliers indicated that towels were among the most frequently missing items. Similarly, 10 per cent of hotels reported missing clothes hangers, a figure significantly higher than the 2 per cent of guests who confessed to taking them.
Survey Methodology and Scope

The "TripBarometer Truth in Travel" poll was administered online by Edelman Berland during June and July of 2013. The survey included responses from 19,692 travellers and 10,469 accommodation business owners from various countries.
