The review indicated that menstrual cups are as unlikely to leak as disposable sanitary pads or tampons. These cups, typically crafted from medical-grade silicone, rubber, or latex, function by collecting menstrual blood rather than absorbing it. They are designed to be inserted into the vagina and require emptying every four to 12 hours. Four of the studies included in the review specifically found that menstrual cups were as effective, or even superior, to pads and tampons in their capacity to collect menstrual flow.
No Evidence of Increased Infection Risk

A significant finding from the research is the absence of any increased risk of infection associated with the use of menstrual cups. This addresses a potential concern regarding internal menstrual products. While five cases of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) were reported in connection with menstrual cups, the researchers noted that a direct comparison to the incidence of TSS with tampons could not be established due to the unknown overall number of menstrual cup users versus tampon users.
Cost-Effectiveness and Long-Term Viability

The economic aspect of menstrual cups further supports their viability as an alternative. In some regions, a single cup can cost less than US$1 and, despite being marginally more expensive upfront than a small supply of disposable products, their reusability over a period of up to 10 years makes them a significantly more cost-effective option in the long run. This contrasts with disposable pads and tampons, which require continuous repurchase.
Limited Awareness Despite Benefits

Despite their demonstrated safety, efficacy, and cost-effectiveness, awareness of menstrual cups remains surprisingly low. Even in developed countries, an average of only one-fifth of women reported being aware of these devices. While nearly 200 brands are available globally, menstrual cups were infrequently mentioned on websites offering educational information about puberty, suggesting a gap in dissemination of knowledge about this alternative menstrual hygiene product.
