The videos are built around sympathy and fake hardship
The clips show AI characters saying they are being bullied while selling resin lamps, crochet handbags and clay bowls. They often use insulting language about disability and push viewers toward online storefronts that look suspicious, including one that claimed multiple five-star reviews with the same filler text.
Some products were first seen in real creators’ content
AFP found that some pottery items first appeared in content made by real creators before being appropriated. One crochet bag design also appeared to be listed on Shein, a site widely used by dropshippers who sell without holding physical stock.
Rowe said the trend reinforces harmful stereotypes
Rowe said the videos play into the idea that people with Down syndrome need pity and cannot create or sell goods themselves. He said there are “lots of really talented people with Down syndrome out there who are making things,” but the AI posts reinforce the opposite message.
The problem has continued even after some removals
Down Syndrome International previously complained to Meta about sexualised deep-fakes of people with Down syndrome, and many of those videos were removed. Even so, other accounts are still sharing AI-generated clips that redirect users to products, and TikTok and YouTube both have rules against deceptive or manipulative activity.
