The recovery of the world economy from the pandemic had increased demand for supplies, creating a tight market. This pre-existing tightness means that while LNG can provide a partial substitute for Russian gas in the short term, its availability may become a limiting factor when demand escalates, particularly during the colder months when both Europe and Asia typically experience higher consumption.
Winter Demand and Potential Shortfalls

Analysts caution that the scope for replacing Russian gas with LNG may be limited, especially as winter approaches. When the weather turns cold and demand rises in Europe and Asia, the total volume of LNG that Europe can import could be insufficient to meet the needs. Even with Germany's gas storage facilities at approximately 85 per cent capacity and European facilities reaching an 80 per cent target, concerns remain. Experts have indicated that even fully stocked storage could be depleted within two and a half months if Russian gas flows were to cease entirely, underscoring the potential for significant shortfalls if alternative supplies cannot adequately bridge the gap.
