Despite India's export restrictions, Malaysia has secured its imported white rice supply from other nations. The country continues to import rice from established suppliers such as Pakistan, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. Rising Global White Rice Prices

The global price of imported white rice has seen a significant increase, currently trading around US$700 per metric tonne. This represents a 36 per cent rise from previous levels, with prices now at RM3,200 per tonne compared to RM2,350 per tonne. While this current price is below the peak of US$1,000 per tonne experienced during the 2008 global rice crisis, it highlights a worldwide trend that is impacting import costs for Malaysia.
Long-Term Self-Sufficiency Goals

In response to global market volatility, Malaysia is pursuing increased rice self-sufficiency. The government aims to reach 75 per cent self-sufficiency by 2025 under the 11th Malaysia Plan and 80 per cent under the National Agrofood Policy 2021-2030. The ultimate objective, as stated by Azman Mahmood, is to achieve 100 per cent self-sufficiency to insulate the nation from external supply disruptions.
Current Stockpiles and Production Efforts

Malaysia currently holds a six-month trading stock of imported white rice, providing a buffer against immediate shortages. Furthermore, efforts are underway to boost local production. The success of the SMART SBB Mini Sekinchan Mada-Bernas paddy farming plan in Kedah and Kelantan could potentially reduce the need for imports by six metric tonnes, with aspirations to implement this plan nationwide.
