The Role of Cooperatives and MSMEs in the Malaysian Economy

The significance of MSMEs to the Malaysian economy is substantial, as demonstrated by their contribution of RM580.4 billion to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2022. In the same year, MSMEs accounted for 10.5 per cent of exports, valued at RM144.5 billion, and provided employment for 48.2 per cent of the workforce, representing 7.59 million individuals. Concurrently, the cooperative sector continued its growth, with 15,809 registered cooperatives by the end of 2022, boasting 7.2 million members and substantial financial standing, including RM17.45 billion in share capital and RM165.89 billion in assets. The franchise sector also contributes, with over 1,000 registered brands.

Beyond direct product promotion, the minister highlighted that the experiences of Malaysians in Jordan, including students, in navigating diverse international environments can significantly contribute to their personal development.
