However, the same findings also point to unresolved issues around scaling up, maintaining stability, and the logistics of transporting Napier grass that is 75 to 85 per cent water.
The lab results showed mono-digestion feasibility with the right microbial seed
In the study, Napier grass was fed as the sole substrate in single-stage CSTRs, without co-digestion using manure or food waste. Two microbial inocula were tested: one from cow manure and another from anaerobic sludge, and the cow manure-seeded reactors performed more robustly. The explanation given for this stronger resilience is that cow manure contains a microbial consortium capable of breaking down fibrous grass.
The digestion worked under specific operating conditions, not by default
The study demonstrated that stable biomethane production was possible when organic loading rates and hydraulic retention times were appropriate. It also indicated that failures could occur if reactors were “pushed too hard, too fast,” implying sensitivity to how aggressively the system is loaded. For grass-fed mono-digestion, stability was described as a tightrope, with fluctuations in organic load and pH potentially triggering acidification.
Scaling up to farm digesters raises practical technical questions
The experiments were conducted at lab scale, so scaling to larger farm digesters (the reference mentions 1,000-litre units) was not directly proven.
