Their history shows repeated alliance and breakdown
PAS and Barisan Nasional governed together in the late 1970s before that partnership collapsed in Kelantan and across the country. PAS later worked with Semangat 46, then with DAP and PKR under opposition coalitions, before joining Perikatan Nasional. Umno has also shifted positions, remaining the backbone of Barisan Nasional for decades and now taking part in the Unity Government.
Supporters on both sides have spent decades fighting each other
The hardest obstacle is not only agreement between leaders but confidence among grassroots members. PAS and Umno supporters have competed intensely for decades, and rebuilding trust across every level is more difficult than announcing cooperation from the top. Any dispute over candidate selection, seat allocation, policy coordination or mutual discipline could quickly weaken the image of unity.
Malaysia’s current electorate is less predictable than in earlier eras
The voting public is younger, more urbanised and more active on digital media than during earlier periods of PAS-Umno cooperation. Economic concerns, jobs, housing affordability and the rising cost of living often matter more than ideological arguments, while voters in Sabah and Sarawak frequently have different political preferences from those in Peninsular Malaysia.
Any deal still has to survive voter judgment
Other political blocs, including Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional as it now stands, parties in Sabah and Sarawak, and smaller regional actors, would adjust their strategies if PAS and Umno moved closer. Malaysian voters increasingly judge parties on governance performance, institutional credibility and how they handle everyday concerns, so any understanding between PAS and Umno would be tested at the ballot box rather than in party announcements.
