Sarawak is confident in its ability to achieve its goal of eradicating rural poverty by 2020, with a current rural poverty rate of 1.6 per cent. This objective is being pursued through a comprehensive strategy involving various economic enhancement programmes coordinated by Resident Offices across the state's 12 divisions, utilising 31 agencies.
Diverse Economic Programmes for the Needy

The implemented economic enhancement programmes are designed to be inclusive, extending beyond agricultural pursuits and land ownership. For individuals without land, the initiative incorporates non-agricultural activities, such as providing essential tools like sewing machines or food processing equipment, notably through the 1Azam programme. These efforts aim to uplift the hard-core poor and needy communities by offering diverse pathways to economic improvement.
Income Improvement and Financial Allocation

A key objective of the programmes initiated this year is to significantly improve the income of poor households, targeting an increase to RM4,000 per household. To support those engaged in agricultural activities, the Sarawak Ministry of Modernisation of Agriculture and Rural Economy has allocated a substantial RM122 million. This funding is crucial for enhancing agricultural productivity and the livelihoods of rural residents.
Infrastructure Development and Market Access

Beyond direct financial aid and skills training, the state government is prioritising the development of marketing infrastructure. This includes establishing collection centres for agricultural produce and semi-processing facilities to support downstream activities. Furthermore, discussions are underway to form anchor farms, which would provide vital support to smallholders and facilitate the export of their products to international markets, thereby boosting economic opportunities.
