Furthermore, 35.5 per cent of Malaysians perceive China as having the greatest political and strategic influence in the region. These perceptions are accompanied by substantial concerns, as 61.7 per cent of Malaysians are worried about China's economic power and a higher 72.7 per cent are concerned about its growing regional political and strategic influence.
Preference for China Over the US

Despite these expressed anxieties, a majority of Malaysians, 54.8 per cent, indicated a preference for China when presented with a choice between the two global superpowers. This contrasts with the broader Asean sentiment, where two-thirds of respondents would opt for the US. The survey results suggest that this preference for China among Malaysians exists independently of their concerns about its growing influence.
Asean's Desire for Neutrality and Resilience

Looking at the broader Asean context, 45.5 per cent of respondents across the region expressed a desire for Asean members to enhance the bloc’s resilience and unity to navigate the influence of both major powers. Within Malaysia, this sentiment is even stronger, with 37.9 per cent of Malaysians preferring Asean to remain neutral and avoid choosing between China and the US, a figure notably higher than the Asean average of 30.5 per cent. This suggests a strong inclination among Malaysians to maintain autonomy and avoid being drawn into geopolitical alignments.
