National Oversight and Whistleblowers (NOW) has claimed that funds from Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia (Yapeim), intended for orphans, were allegedly used to finance an eight-day trip to the United States. This trip, according to NOW, involved a shopping spree and golf, undertaken by Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom, his wife, and their entourage, at a cost exceeding RM400,000. These activities allegedly occurred while they were meant to be participating in an official charity program organised by the state-linked agency. Both the minister and Yapeim have denied these allegations.
Allegations of Misuse of Funds

NOW, an anti-graft group linked to PKR, specifically alleged that over RM400,000 of Yapeim funds, earmarked for orphans, were purportedly used for an eight-day trip to the United States. This trip reportedly included activities such as shopping and playing golf. The organisation claimed that this occurred during a period when the minister and his entourage were scheduled to attend an official charity program organised by Yapeim.
Official Denials and Legal Action

Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom, the Islamic affairs minister, and Yapeim have both publicly denied the allegations of financial impropriety. In response to the claims made by NOW, Jamil Khir has initiated a defamation lawsuit seeking RM10 million against Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, the director of NOW.
Ongoing Police Investigation

The Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, confirmed that the police have opened an investigation file concerning Yapeim following the corruption allegations. However, he stated that no arrests have been made yet, as the investigation is still in its preliminary stages. The police are reportedly leaving the investigation into alleged power abuse within the charity, which is overseen by Jamil Khir Baharom, to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
