The lead author of the study, Dr Andrew Stokes, stated that the dual use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes appears to be as detrimental to cardiovascular health as exclusive cigarette smoking. He advised that if e-cigarettes are employed in attempts to quit smoking, complete cessation of cigarette smoking is necessary, alongside a strategy for freedom from all tobacco products. This recommendation underscores the concern that substituting some, but not all, traditional cigarette use with vaping does not negate the associated cardiovascular risks.
Potential Harms of E-cigarette Aerosols

While the study indicated that exclusive vaping did not show increased cardiovascular inflammation or oxidative stress markers compared to non-use, it is important to note that exclusive e-cigarette use was relatively rare within the study sample, prompting a call for further investigation. Dr Stokes also pointed out that e-cigarette aerosols contain various harmful constituents, including volatile organic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and metals. Although these may be present in lower concentrations than in traditional cigarettes, their presence indicates that exclusive e-cigarette use is not without its own set of risks.
