Senator Rubio Requests Review of TikTok's Acquisition of Musical.ly Due to National Security Concerns

Senator Marco Rubio has formally requested a review by a US national security panel concerning Beijing ByteDance Technology Co's acquisition of Musical.ly, the company that owns TikTok. Rubio expressed concerns that the Chinese government may be leveraging TikTok to censor politically sensitive content. He communicated these apprehensions in a letter addressed to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, highlighting the increasing use of Chinese-owned applications for content suppression and the silencing of discussions on topics deemed sensitive by the Chinese Government and Communist Party.

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), which is overseen by the Treasury Secretary, is responsible for examining such acquisitions to ensure they do not pose a threat to national security. Rubio indicated that there is mounting evidence suggesting that TikTok in the United States is indeed censoring content that is not aligned with the directives of the Chinese government.

A spokesperson for TikTok in the US asserted that all user data from the United States is stored within the country. Furthermore, the spokesperson stated that the Chinese government does not direct TikTok to censor content and would lack the jurisdictional authority to do so, as TikTok does not operate within China.

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, acquired Musical.ly in December 2017 for a sum approaching US$1 billion. Subsequently, Musical.ly was integrated into the TikTok application for markets outside of China. Both Musical.ly, launched in 2014, and TikTok, released in 2016, provided platforms for users to create and share short-form videos, often set to popular music and enhanced with special effects. ByteDance's original application, Douyin, operates exclusively within China and adheres to local censorship regulations.
