As of early February 2018, no instances of rabies virus transmission to humans have been identified in the Julau district, despite the confirmation of three canine rabies cases. The focus has been on containment and prevention within the animal population to safeguard public health.
Three Canine Rabies Cases Confirmed

Three samples collected from dogs in the Julau district have been confirmed positive for rabies. The initial case involved a dog captured near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Julau No. 2 on December 31, 2017. Subsequently, on January 8, two more stray dogs tested positive; one was found by the roadside at Rumah Paing, Km 19 Jalan Kelupu-Julau-Durin (KJD), and the other at Jalan Julau/Entabai, approximately two kilometres from Julau Town.
Vaccination Campaign Underway

In response to these findings, the Sarikei Veterinary Services Department has initiated an anti-rabies vaccination programme. This initiative targets dogs located within a 10-kilometre radius of the areas where the three rabid dogs were discovered. This measure aims to establish a protective buffer and prevent further spread of the virus.
Over a Thousand Dogs Vaccinated

The vaccination effort has been extensive, with a total of 1,208 dogs receiving the anti-rabies vaccine. These animals were found in Julau and also in certain areas under the jurisdiction of the Sibu Rural District Council, indicating a broad approach to disease control across the affected regions.
