A substantial portion of businesses surveyed are aware of Development Financial Institutions (DFIs) but have not utilized their services, indicating a gap between awareness and application. Conversely, a notable percentage of businesses report a lack of awareness regarding these institutions altogether.
Awareness Exists, But Application is Low

Findings from the Malaysia’s Business and Economic Conditions Survey (M-BECS) indicate that 45.9 per cent of respondents are aware of Development Financial Institutions (DFIs). Despite this awareness, these businesses have never applied for financing from DFIs. This suggests that knowledge of DFIs does not automatically translate into engagement with them for financial needs.
Significant Lack of Awareness Persists

The survey also revealed a considerable deficit in knowledge about DFIs, with 50.6 per cent of respondents stating they lacked awareness of these institutions. This highlights a fundamental challenge in ensuring that businesses, particularly micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), are informed about the potential resources available to them.
Perceptions of DFIs Are Mixed

While many businesses are aware of DFIs, their perceptions regarding accessibility, responsiveness, and approval speed are mixed. More than half of the respondents expressed neutrality on these aspects, even though they generally view the financing terms and competitive rates offered by DFIs positively. This suggests that despite favourable terms, practical concerns about the application process and engagement with DFIs may deter potential applicants.
