Emergency medical services cannot be everywhere at once, so there is often a narrow window between collapse and arrival of professional care. During this period, bystanders are the ones who can start cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while waiting for help. Healthcare systems worldwide increasingly recognise that improving cardiac arrest survival requires building prepared communities, not only expanding hospital capacity. Each additional person trained in CPR becomes a potential first responder, and places such as workplaces, schools, mosques, sports facilities, and neighbourhoods can become part of a broader public safety network. The goal is that saving lives begins before a patient reaches the emergency department, with the first five minutes before help arrives belonging to the community.
Continuous learning tools help skills last beyond a one-time course
A major challenge is not just teaching CPR once, but ensuring people remember what to do months or years later when a real emergency occurs, since knowledge fades and confidence can drop.
