The ranking improved sharply in 2026
Malaysia climbed from 23rd place last year to 15th in the IMD World Competitiveness Index 2026. That eight-position jump was the result Anwar pointed to when speaking to civil servants in Simpang Ampat, Alor Gajah.
Turkmenistan’s president also noticed the improvement
Anwar said Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedov acknowledged Malaysia’s performance during a recent visit. He said Berdimuhamedov was interested in sending his country’s civil service team to speak with Malaysian officials and learn from their experience.
The recognition was framed as a team achievement
Anwar told the audience at the Centre of Excellence for Engineering and Technology, Public Works Department, that the praise was a compliment to Malaysia. He said it showed the country was “moving forward,” with the civil service playing a central role in that progress.
