Conversely, the AdReaction report reveals a starkly different reality for consumers in Malaysia. A considerable 63 per cent of targeted Malaysians indicated that advertisements conform to their established perceptions of gender stereotypes. This sentiment is echoed regionally, with 60 per cent of the APAC population agreeing that most ads reinforce rather than challenge harmful gender-based stereotypes, indicating a widespread dissatisfaction with current advertising portrayals.
Discrepancy in Progress and Representation

The study further points to an industry struggle in effectively portraying women in advertising. When both genders appear in ads, men are featured more prominently than women by a margin of 38 per cent. This imbalance is notable, especially considering research indicating that progressive advertisements, particularly those featuring authoritative female characters, tend to outperform other ad types.
