Court of Appeal Reduces Lim Guan Eng's Defamation Damages Against Muhyiddin

The Court of Appeal has reduced the general damages awarded to DAP adviser Lim Guan Eng in his defamation suit against Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin from RM1.05 million to RM450,000. This decision stems from Muhyiddin's appeal against the Kuala Lumpur High Court's earlier ruling.
Reduced General Damages Awarded

The High Court had initially awarded Lim Guan Eng RM1.05 million in general damages in November 2024. However, the Court of Appeal, after reviewing the case, found the original sum to be "manifestly high." Consequently, the appellate court awarded RM150,000 for each of the three defamatory statements made by Muhyiddin, resulting in a revised total of RM450,000 in general damages.
Set Aside of Aggravated and Exemplary Damages

In addition to reducing the general damages, the Court of Appeal also set aside the High Court's award of RM150,000 for aggravated damages and RM150,000 for exemplary damages. This means Lim Guan Eng will not receive these additional sums as initially ordered by the High Court.
Interest Awarded on Damages

While reducing the quantum of damages, the Court of Appeal granted Lim Guan Eng's cross-appeal concerning interest. The court ordered that interest be paid at a rate of five per cent per annum on the awarded sum, calculated from the date of judgment until full settlement of the amount.
Costs Order

The Court of Appeal also issued an order regarding costs. Muhyiddin was ordered to pay RM5,000 in costs to Lim Guan Eng. Conversely, Lim Guan Eng was ordered to pay RM30,000 in costs to the former prime minister, reflecting the partial success of Muhyiddin's appeal.
