The bistro began as a small, rustic Parisian restaurant serving simple everyday food, but in Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley it has become a broad, catch-all term attached to many new dining spots. Its current appeal is less about strict authenticity and more about price, with diners drawn to dishes such as duck confit for under RM50 and steak frites for under RM150.
Its original form was simple and modest
A traditional bistro, or bistrot, came from Paris and was built around everyday food in an unpretentious setting. Common dishes included French onion soup, pâté or terrine, oeuf mayonnaise, escargots de Bourgogne, confit de canard, roast chicken, boeuf bourguignon, crème brûlée, and tarte Tatin.
It is now used much more loosely in Klang Valley
In Klang Valley, the term has spread across the city from central areas to Mont Kiara, TTDI, and Bukit Jalil. It is no longer limited to restaurants alone, and has also entered dining vocabulary more broadly, with items like steak frites appearing on menus at many air-conditioned restaurants with Instagram accounts.
The modern appeal is affordability rather than luxury
