Furthermore, this phenomenon can lead to the destabilisation of democratic structures. The EU's top technology enforcer, Thierry Breton, highlighted these concerns, noting that exposure of children to violent content is another adverse consequence. Recent attacks in France and Belgium have underscored the tangible and present threat disinformation poses on European soil.
Digital Services Act Mandates Stricter Content Policing

In response to these growing threats, the European Commission has initiated a probe into X (formerly Twitter) under the Digital Services Act (DSA). This investigation aims to ascertain whether the platform has facilitated the spread of illicit content. The DSA signifies a move towards a more rigorous approach to content moderation, requiring 19 very large online platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, to adhere to stricter regulations starting February 2024.
Call for Enhanced Coordination Among Member States

Beyond regulatory measures for platforms, the European Commission is also emphasising the need for accelerated coordination among EU member states. Breton has stressed that waiting until February 2024 is not an option for addressing these immediate challenges. The commission has urged member states to promptly identify their national authorities, designated as Digital Services Coordinators, who will collaborate with the commission to enforce the DSA, noting that many countries have yet to formally name these crucial liaisons.
