The Federal Court today commuted the death sentences of nine individuals to life imprisonment of 30 years. Commutation for a 76-Year-Old Former Security Guard

Among those whose death sentences were commuted was 76-year-old Jun Lam @ Chin See Kong, also known by his Muslim name Idris Chin Abdullah. Jun Lam had been imprisoned for 17 years, having been arrested on December 3, 2006, and subsequently sentenced to death by the High Court on October 10, 2008, for trafficking 1,558 grammes of ketamine. His appeals at the Court of Appeal and Federal Court had previously been dismissed in 2012 and 2014, respectively. The Federal Court ordered his life sentence of 30 years to commence from his arrest date in 2006.
Inclusion of Two Foreign Nationals

The group of nine also included two foreign nationals: 60-year-old Ghanaian Emmanuel Yaw Tieku and 52-year-old Liberian national Nobies Weah Ezike. Their death sentences were similarly commuted to 30 years of life imprisonment, with their sentences to be served from their respective arrest dates.
Other Individuals Affected by the Commutation

The remaining individuals whose death sentences were commuted to 30 years of life imprisonment are Mohd Zaiham Mislan, 48; Mohamad Che Tam, 62; Faiz Khairudin, 53; Siew Yoke Keong, 56; Wong Hong, 68; and Phung Geok Hoay, 70. All were originally sentenced to death by separate High Courts for drug trafficking offences.
Additional Sentence for One Individual

In addition to the life imprisonment of 30 years, Mohd Zaiham Mislan was also ordered by the court to receive 12 strokes of the whip. Deputy public prosecutors representing the prosecution did not object to these review applications.
