As of March 31, 2021, Malaysia had a total of 5.707 million premises with fibre connectivity. The deployment of fibre coverage is progressing at a rate of approximately 300,000 premises per quarter. TM, for instance, has committed to delivering an additional 300,000 fibre-enabled premises in the first half of the year.
JENDELA Phase 1 Progress

JENDELA Phase 1, which aims to improve broadband access across the nation, is on track for its end-2022 target. There are currently 1.79 million premises remaining to be covered under Phase 1. The plan submissions for Phase 1 projects, which involve deploying new towers in 1,661 locations across 106 clusters, closed on March 31, 2021, with implementation slated to begin in Q3 2021.
Challenges in Download Speeds

Despite the advancements in premises connected to fibre broadband, average download speeds have shown minimal improvement. The current average speed stands at 25.44Mbps, a slight increase of 1.76 per cent from previous periods. In fact, speeds saw a minor decrease from 25.6Mbps in December 2020. JENDELA aims to increase average download speeds to 35Mbps, a target that remains a significant area for improvement, with Malaysia's mobile speeds lagging behind several ASEAN countries.
