Approximately 4,000 schools nationwide will benefit from the Point of Presence (PoP) fibre optic network.

The Communications and Multimedia Ministry (K-KOMM) has allocated RM4 billion for the installation of Point of Presence (PoP) fibre optic network hubs, which will involve nearly 4,000 schools across the country. This initiative aims to enhance internet network stability and speed, particularly in rural areas. The project is set to commence soon following the closure of the tender process for the PoP phase two programme.
Nationwide Rollout Across Multiple Zones

The fibre optic installation will extend to schools located in the northern, central, southern, and eastern zones of Malaysia, as well as in Sabah and Sarawak. This comprehensive approach ensures broad geographical coverage. Within each identified zone, the target is to install fibre optics in between 500 to 600 schools, contributing to the overall national goal.
Enhanced Internet Services and Collaboration

The implementation of the PoP fibre optic network is projected to take 36 months. K-KOMM has expressed its willingness to collaborate with the Rural Development Ministry (KPLB) to improve fibre optic network services, especially in rural areas. This collaboration is crucial for providing stable internet connectivity to all schools lacking quality services.
Prioritising Rural and Early Education Access

Beyond primary and secondary schools, K-KOMM also intends to prioritise Kemas kindergartens for internet access upgrades. Similar to schools, these kindergartens will receive attention to enhance their internet capabilities, facilitating online learning for young students. This move underscores the ministry's commitment to digital inclusion across all levels of education.
Broader Digital Network Plan Context

This fibre optic initiative is part of a larger effort to improve digital infrastructure. Under the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA) phase one, 4G internet access coverage in populated areas has already surpassed 95%. The target for the end of the year is to reach approximately 97% coverage in populated areas, with satellite methods considered for remaining inland regions. The overall project aims for internet network coverage speeds reaching 35 megabytes per second (Mbps).
