A two-year biodiversity survey on Pulau Ubin has identified a total of 20 animal species previously unknown to the island. Of these, six species have not been recorded anywhere else in Singapore. Six of the 20 newly identified species represent entirely new records for Singapore, meaning they had not been documented within the country prior to this survey. An additional 13 species, while not previously found on Pulau Ubin, had been observed in other locations across Singapore.
New Spider Species Identified

Among the significant findings is a new species of spider belonging to the Piranthus genus, which is yet to be formally named. Researchers initially believed specimens collected belonged to the Bavia species. However, closer examination of a specimen from Pulau Ubin revealed it to be an entirely new species. The female of this spider is distinguished by its bright reddish-orange coloration on the front two pairs of its legs.
Notable Butterfly and Bat Sightings

The survey also recorded the Swamp Tiger Butterfly and the White-banded Awl Butterfly on Pulau Ubin for the first time. The Black-bearded Tomb Bat, a species infrequently observed and notable for the males' distinctive black beard, was also documented on the island for the first time.
Implications for Conservation and Future Research

The findings from this comprehensive survey, due to conclude at the end of the year, will be instrumental in guiding future research and species recovery initiatives on Pulau Ubin. Information gathered will inform decisions regarding reforestation projects, including the selection of native tree species to be planted. Separately, over 16,000 native trees are being planted across three disused quarries on the island to create habitats for local biodiversity, such as the Greater Mousedeer and the Leopard Cat.
