More than half of public university students enrolled in STEM programmes between 2023 and March 2026

A total of 326,419 students enrolled in STEM programmes in Malaysian public higher education institutions between 2023 and March 2026. This accounted for 58.6 per cent of the 556,556 students who enrolled in diploma and bachelor’s degree programmes during the period. In comparison, 230,137 students (41.4 per cent) enrolled in non-STEM programmes.

The Ministry of Higher Education data from its MyMOHES system shows that 556,556 students enrolled in diploma and bachelor’s degree programmes at Malaysian public higher education institutions between 2023 and March 2026. These figures were presented in the Dewan Rakyat by Deputy Higher Education Minister Adam Adli Abd Halim. The breakdown that followed uses this total as the base.
STEM enrolment: 326,419 students, or 58.6 per cent
Of the 556,556 students, 326,419 enrolled in science and technology-related (STEM) programmes. This represents 58.6 per cent of all students covered in the period. The minister said the distribution reflects a strong emphasis by public universities on building STEM talent.

This means STEM enrolment was higher than non-STEM enrolment by 96,282 students over the same 2023 to March 2026 window.
