Alter-Ego, a 1.2m tall medical robot with expressive eyebrows, is being trialled in Milan to handle basic in-hospital duties while healthcare staff keep clinical oversight. The robot takes on basic ward interactions while nurses keep clinical control
In the Milan trial, Alter-Ego can stand in for a doctor working remotely, bring a bottle of water, and guide a patient to treatment. During testing since April in an ALS care department, the robot is remotely controlled by an operator, and from July it will work autonomously. Even with those capabilities, nurses still monitor patients and administer medicine, with no direct handover of pill administration to the robot.
Pain and communication signals are routed to nurses in real time
A patient at Maugeri Hospital, Daniel Senna, uses the robot’s chest screen to transmit his pain level. The collected data is sent instantly to the ward’s nurses, while the robot prompts the patient with questions such as how he is doing and whether he needs anything. This setup keeps the caregiver role tied to receiving signals and responding through monitoring and medication.
Caregivers are expected to spend less time on routine tasks
Hospital staff point to the existence of “repetitive tasks” in hospitals that could be delegated to a robot. By taking over those routine activities, the project aims to give healthcare workers more time for the “human relationship” they must maintain with patients. One neurologist also notes that while Alter-Ego may look capable, pill administration has not been directly delegated to it.
The caregiver role can become more like companionship over time
The trial framing describes a possible shift in how patients experience support: being able to ask the robot for things may feel more liberating. At the same time, reducing certain tasks can allow a caregiver to “revert to simply being a companion,” such as acting more like a mother or daughter in day-to-day interaction. The neurologist further suggests the robot could help in other ways as the neurodegenerative disease progresses.
