EPF Withdrawals Are Not Considered Aid by Pakatan Harapan

Instead, PH proposed that the government disburse an additional RM1,000 twice in March and April to recipients of the Bantuan Sara Hidup (BSH) financial aid as a more direct form of assistance.
Pakatan Harapan's Proposed Alternative Aid

In response to the economic impact of the movement control order, Pakatan Harapan suggested an alternative to EPF withdrawals. They recommended that Putrajaya provide an additional RM1,000 payment to BSH recipients in both March and April. This measure was estimated to cost Putrajaya RM8.2 billion and was presented as a faster method to support those most affected by the MCO.
The Nature of EPF Withdrawals

The EPF is a mandatory savings scheme designed to provide retirement income for members. Withdrawals from EPF, particularly from Account Two as announced by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, allow individuals aged 55 and below to access up to RM500 monthly for essential goods. However, PH's stance highlights that these funds are not new government allocations but are drawn from personal savings intended for long-term financial security.
Government's EPF Withdrawal Initiative

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced that Malaysians could withdraw a maximum of RM500 per month from their EPF savings. This initiative, aimed at helping citizens purchase essential goods during the Covid-19 pandemic, is available to all Malaysians aged 55 and below for a period exceeding 12 months, specifically from Account Two. The government also implemented a reduction in the statutory contribution rate for employees by four per cent, effective April 1, to increase disposable income.
