George Town was officially granted city status by a Royal Charter from Queen Elizabeth II on January 1, 1957. This historic event followed a petition submitted by three Penang citizens seeking city status. The Royal Charter was handed over by the British High Commissioner to Malaya, Sir Donald Charles MacGillivray, to the then George Town municipal council president, Cunyngham-Brown, in a ceremony attended by thousands.
