Samad offered an alternative explanation for the DAP's loss in the Teluk Intan by-election, attributing it primarily to the strong local presence and established political standing of the Gerakan president, Datuk Mah Siew Keong, who was the opposing candidate. Mah Siew Keong, a prominent figure in Perak, had previously held the federal seat for two terms. Additionally, Samad noted that the generally low voter turnout, recorded at 67.4 per cent in the Teluk Intan poll, is a common characteristic of by-election contests and can significantly influence outcomes. This contrasts with the DAP's substantial victory in the Bukit Gelugor by-election held just a week prior, where similar internal issues were present but did not impede their success, suggesting the local candidate was a more decisive factor in Teluk Intan.
Public Dissatisfaction with BN Remains a Key Factor

PKR vice-president N. Surendran concurred that while issues such as hudud and the administration in Selangor require resolution, he does not anticipate a significant voter exodus from Pakatan Rakyat in the upcoming general election. Surendran pointed to the persistent public dissatisfaction with BN's governance, characterising it as corrupt and oppressive, and stated that the desire to remove BN from power remains a strong motivator for voters. He acknowledged that PKR's internal party elections had been an "embarrassment" but highlighted the party's prompt admission of fault and the subsequent re-elections as evidence of accountability and a commitment to transparency.
