Justice Dr John Lee Kien How @ Mohammad Johan Lee stated that the plaintiff, R. Sivakumar, did not successfully demonstrate that electrocution was the cause of his daughter S. Vinosiny's demise. Vinosiny, a 21-year-old second-year student, was found dead in her dormitory room on May 21, 2022. The father had sought over RM3 million in damages, alleging negligence on the part of UUM.
Energy Commission Inspection Found System Functioning Properly

Evidence presented indicated that the Energy Commission had conducted a comprehensive inspection of the electrical system at the student residential college. This inspection concluded that all electrical installations and devices were functioning properly. Furthermore, no physical evidence of damage to any electrical equipment was found during the examination.
Court Found No Breach of Duty of Care

The court determined that the plaintiff had not established a breach of duty of care by UUM. Without proof linking the alleged electrocution to the university's actions or omissions, the claim could not be substantiated. Consequently, Sivakumar was ordered to pay RM5,000 in costs to UUM.
Father Plans to File an Appeal

Following the High Court's decision, Sivakumar's legal representative announced that his client intends to file an appeal against the ruling. The father's lawsuit, initially filed on February 28, 2022, sought RM1 million each in general, aggravated, and exemplary damages, along with RM50,000 in special damages.
