The position of Dewan Negara deputy speaker became vacant after Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed’s previous term as a senator concluded last month. He took his oath of office for his second senatorial term before Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah. His new appointment as a senator is effective from June 15 and will continue until June 14, 2029.
Nomination Process

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir put forth Nur Jazlan’s nomination for the deputy speaker post. As Nur Jazlan was the only candidate put forward, his reappointment was confirmed by the Dewan Negara president.
Previous Term and Election

Nur Jazlan initially assumed the role of Dewan Negara deputy speaker on June 19, 2023. In that election, he secured 43 votes, defeating Bersatu information chief Datuk Razali Idris. Datuk Razali Idris' nomination had been proposed by Datuk Dominic Lau, who was the Gerakan president at that time.
