Air monitoring around Kampung Parit Mentara 3 following the spill of approximately 20,000 litres of Acetone revealed no hazardous substances. The Perak Fire and Rescue Department's Hazardous Materials Unit (Hazmat) conducted extensive checks using multiple detection devices to assess the air quality in the vicinity of the incident.
Air Quality Monitoring Procedures

The Hazmat team employed three types of detectors: litmus paper, a GFG 450 unit, and Gasmed. The GFG 450 is capable of identifying key substances including oxygen, carbon dioxide, methane gas, and hydrogen sulphide. Monitoring efforts continued until 3 am, and at no point during this period were any hazardous substances indicated in the air.
Detector Readings and Previous Incidents

Further confirmation was provided by the Gasmed detector, a device previously utilised during the Sungai Kim Kim incident in Pasir Gudang, Johor. This instrument, which can detect up to 2,500 different chemicals, also showed no harmful readings in the air around the spill site. These comprehensive checks aimed to ensure the safety of residents in the affected area.
Spill Containment and Dissolution Efforts

In addition to air monitoring, firefighters took measures to mitigate the risks associated with the Acetone spill. Water was pumped into the trailer's tank to facilitate the dissolution of the Acetone. This process was carried out for three hours, commencing at 1 am, to help neutralise the spilled chemical and minimise its potential impact. Acetone itself is described as a colourless, highly flammable chemical liquid commonly used as a solvent in products such as paint and nail polish.
