A Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigating officer stated in the High Court that Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was not questioned about the reason for two cheques, totalling RM9.5 million, issued to Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah's lawyer in 2013 and 2014. When questioned by the deputy public prosecutor, the investigating officer confirmed that no invoices were presented regarding this payment.
Absence of Invoices for the Payment

The MACC investigating officer, Mohamad Farid Jabar, confirmed under questioning that there were no invoices related to the RM9.5 million payment made through two cheques. These cheques, one for RM4.3 million dated September 3, 2013, and another for RM5.2 million dated February 17, 2014, were issued by Najib.
Purpose of the Payment

The witness testified that the RM9.5 million was intended as payment for legal advice rendered by Muhammad Shafee. This advice was provided to Najib, Umno, and in Najib's capacity as prime minister, covering the period from 2004 to 2006, and also included services for election petitions.

It was noted that on September 13, 2018, Muhammad Shafee pleaded not guilty to charges of receiving RM9.5 million, which were alleged to be proceeds from unlawful activities. These funds were reportedly transferred via the two cheques issued by Najib. Additionally, Muhammad Shafee faced charges related to submitting incorrect tax returns for the financial years ending December 31, 2013, and December 31, 2014.
