Beyond the mere presence of these chemicals, the study also investigated their hormonal activity. Two out of every ten pairs of socks from the bargain retailer demonstrated estrogenic hormonal activity, meaning the sock extracts mimicked the effects of female hormones. Furthermore, one out of every three pairs sourced from the same bargain retailer exhibited anti-androgenic activity, indicating interference with male hormones. These findings suggest a potential for disruptive effects on hormone regulation.
Exposure Route and Potential Health Links

The concern for infant exposure stems from the common behaviour of babies sucking on their feet, which could lead to the ingestion of these chemicals through the digestive tract. Endocrine disruptors like BPA and parabens have been previously linked to a spectrum of health problems. In children, these include attention deficits, hyperactivity, and obesity. In adults, associations have been made with infertility, diabetes, and hormone-dependent cancers.
