Carly Simon said she had been “learning how to live with Parkinson’s disease” after revealing that she had been diagnosed with the condition. She added that it had taken time to understand the diagnosis, adjust to it, and decide how much to say about it publicly.
She described Parkinson’s as unpredictable and different for each person.
Simon said Parkinson’s “is different for everyone” and “can be unpredictable.” She said some days she was “so tired” that she could not get the day moving at all, while on other days it gave her more room to move, think, work, and feel like herself.
She linked the diagnosis to earlier physical problems and surgeries.
Simon said her problems began with arthritis in both knees and one hip. She underwent three joint replacement surgeries, and after that she assumed her difficulty walking was part of the recovery process.
She said music gave her sanctuary during the period of diagnosis.
Simon said she found sanctuary in music and even began recording a new album, Comes in Waves, during that period. The album is her first new collection of original tracks since 2008 and is due for release on August 14.
She also said she had been treated for skin cancer.
Alongside the Parkinson’s diagnosis, Simon said she had been treated for a facial basal cell carcinoma. She said the cancer was removed, but the surgery affected her appearance and made her more self-conscious about being seen in public.
