The new Keppel, Cantonment, and Prince Edward Road stations were unveiled to the public on July 4, and they are set to open together on July 12. Their opening completes the MRT line’s loop, which has been planned for more than three decades.
Direct MRT access is for residents around the stations
Siow specifically described the opening as providing residents in the area direct MRT access. In practical terms, that means commuters in the station catchment areas gain straightforward access to the Circle Line through these newly opened stops.
The stations also come with wider system changes once the loop is closed
Once the loop is closed, the Circle Line will operate three services: clockwise, anti-clockwise, and a shuttle to and from Dhoby Ghaut. The line is supported by a fleet of 87 trains, and it recorded over 500,000 weekday rides in 2025.
The stations were built around complex works near key sites
The final stage proceeded only after key land parcels, including the former Tanjong Pagar Railway Station and port terminals, were returned and cleared. Construction involved tunnelling about 7m beneath the nearly century-old Tanjong Pagar Railway Station without damaging it, and navigating works under the live Keppel Viaduct while protecting its foundations.
