The winner should be fair to all, not just one group
Helen Mary, 58, said the party does not matter as much as whether the winner will be fair to everyone in Kuala Kangsar. She added that the leader must help the people who voted for them, while acknowledging it is difficult to satisfy everyone but the MP should still do their best. Her view centres on fairness and broad prioritisation across the community.
More development and jobs, including a shopping mall with a cinema
Businessman Ming Fook Woh, 60, said he hopes the new MP will look into further development of Kuala Kangsar. He pointed to young people leaving the town for jobs and ventures, and suggested building a shopping mall with a cinema to bring more jobs and entertainment. He described Kuala Kangsar as becoming more of a sleepy town despite being the royal town of Perak, and said bringing back “life” is important.
Residents also link the by-election to community life and a peaceful contest
Some residents framed the by-election as a chance to gather with family, especially as locals working outstation return home to vote. Shop assistant Ramlah Ismail, 51, said she is looking forward to her children coming back to vote and described preparing their favourite food and curry buns ahead of Ramadan. Others said they hope the by-election will be conducted peacefully out of respect for the late MP Datuk Wan Khairil Anuar Wan Ahmad.
Some residents are indifferent or doubt elections will bring help
Not everyone is engaged in the by-election. Store manager N. Saraswathy, 40, said she does not plan to vote, citing concerns about the rising cost of living and stating that she has not received any help while she works a second job to support her three children. A 69-year-old retiree, Kwok, said he is tired of repeated cycles of empty promises and doubts any winner will deliver meaningful improvement, while clerk Ng Kun Wah, 35, said politics does not concern him and he has never registered to vote.
