They stated unequivocally that the charge of soliciting prostitution was fabricated.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang confirmed that a consulate employee, identified as a Hong Kong citizen and thus a Chinese national, had been placed in administrative detention for 15 days for breaking a public security law. The Global Times further suggested Cheng could face a fine of up to 5,000 yuan for the alleged crime. The newspaper also claimed it was at Cheng's request that police did not contact his family, implying the ongoing public attention was a result of British involvement. Despite these claims, the family has stated that a lawyer they hired in Shenzhen has been unable to locate or speak with Cheng.
