In contrast, rural Malays, particularly those residing in predominantly Malay areas, experience significantly less interaction with other ethnic groups. The survey indicates that in these regions, there is a stronger tendency to favour the continuation of existing Bumiputera privileges, reflecting a more insular perspective shaped by their social environment.
Regional Variations Highlight Socioeconomic and Interactional Differences

The survey results underscore substantial regional differences in attitudes towards equal rights. While East Malaysia showed strong support for equal treatment at 65 per cent, and central and southern Peninsular Malaysia also leaned towards equality (52 per cent and 53 per cent respectively), the northern and East Coast regions displayed marked opposition. In the northern region, 51 per cent opposed equal rights, and in the East Coast states, this figure rose to a significant 75 per cent. These variations are understood to stem from differing social classes and the degree of interethnic engagement prevalent in these areas, as explained by Merdeka Center’s co-founder, Ibrahim Suffian.
Survey Methodology and Demographics

The Merdeka Center Youth Survey was conducted between April 3 and May 12, 2024, involving 1,605 youths aged 18 to 30 through telephone interviews. The sample composition included 57 per cent Malays, 21 per cent Chinese, and 7 per cent Indians, with the remaining respondents from other ethnic groups. The age distribution was spread across 20 per cent aged 18-20, 41 per cent aged 21-24, and 39 per cent aged 25-30, providing a broad demographic representation of Malaysian youth.
