New Judicial Commissioners Bring Diverse Legal Expertise to the Bench

Seven individuals with extensive legal backgrounds have been appointed as Judicial Commissioners, bringing a range of experience to the Malaysian judiciary. Among the newly appointed is Datuk Wong Kian Kheong, a lawyer notably recognized for leading the defence of former transport minister Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik in the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) project cheating case. Prior to this appointment, Wong led his own legal firm and also served as a government prosecutor.
Diverse Backgrounds Among Appointees

The appointments encompass a variety of legal roles and specialisations. Datuk Azimah Omar, the Federal Court’s chief registrar, brings her administrative and judicial oversight experience to the bench. Additionally, Datuk Nordin Hassan and Noorin Badarudin, both from the Attorney-General’s Chambers, contribute their experience from the public prosecution and advisory sectors. Datuk Mat Zara’ai Alias, who chairs the Prime Minister’s Department’s board of advisers, adds a strategic advisory perspective.
Experience from Government and Private Practice

Further enriching the judicial pool, Datuk Azmi Ariffin, formerly the Kedah legal advisor, brings governmental legal advisory expertise. Colin Lawrence Sequerah, a senior lawyer in private practice, also joins the ranks, representing extensive experience in litigation and legal counsel. These appointments were formalised in the presence of the country's Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria, among other high-ranking judicial officials.
