Analysts said higher gasoline prices tend to be a headwind for low- and middle-income consumers, while other car buyers benefited from stock market records and appreciating home prices. Cox executive analyst Erin Keating said the new-car market has continued to “run towards the well-heeled consumer,” while lower-income shoppers have gravitated to the used-car market. This split helps explain why larger vehicles like trucks and SUVs could still attract demand from buyers with stronger financial positions, at the same time that hybrids gained traction among shoppers prioritising fuel efficiency.
EV weakness and product timing shifted the balance toward trucks, SUVs, and hybrids
GM reported a drop in sales of GM electric vehicles, partly tied to legislation eliminating a consumer tax credit for such vehicles, and it also cited discontinued products as a factor in its year-over-year decline. Even so, GM recorded increases in several SUVs including the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Traverse and Equinox, and its presentation highlighted higher sales for the GMC Sierra pickup truck.
