The Covid-19 pandemic acted as a catalyst for digital transformation across businesses in Malaysia. Prior to the pandemic, initiatives to embrace digital technologies, particularly among SMEs, had seen limited success. However, the crisis spurred companies to expedite their digital transformation efforts, with 37 per cent of SMEs and 32 per cent of large and listed companies expanding or upgrading their technology capabilities, according to a survey by Ernst & Young PLT (EY).
Challenges with Connectivity During Movement Control Order

The Movement Control Order (MCO) highlighted significant inadequatenesses in the digital preparedness of Malaysian businesses. A substantial majority of companies experienced difficulties with online connectivity and communication with both suppliers and customers. Specifically, 83 per cent of large and listed companies and 84 per cent of SMEs reported these challenges, in addition to infrastructure-related issues.
Need for Enhanced Digital Infrastructure

To effectively support digital transformation and prepare for a more digitally enabled future, there is a recognized need for substantial improvements to both business and national digital and communication infrastructure. A key area for intervention identified by approximately 40 per cent of respondents is the need for better and more cost-effective online connectivity solutions. This underscores the critical importance of robust online connectivity and broadband speed.
