Distinct from Previous ATM Card Cloning

This current hacking incident is notably different from the ATM card cloning cases that occurred in Malaysia between 1997 and 2002. Those earlier crimes relied on the magnetic tape technology present on ATM and credit cards at the time. The elimination of such vulnerabilities was facilitated by Bank Negara Malaysia's mandate for chip-based technology on all ATM cards, enforced from 2003 onwards.
