The compliance rate for seatbelt usage among passengers and drivers of express and tour buses in Malaysia has been recorded at a high level, with only 0.25 per cent of individuals inspected receiving summonses since enforcement began on July 1. Between July 1 and the time of the report, inspections were conducted on 3,257 buses, encompassing 2,459 express buses and 798 tour buses nationwide. During these checks, a total of 123,706 passengers and drivers were examined.
Minimal Summonses Issued for Non-Compliance

Out of the extensive number of individuals inspected, only 305 summonses were issued for seatbelt violations. These summonses were distributed as follows: 238 were issued to passengers on express buses, 43 to passengers on tour buses, and 24 to bus drivers. This indicates a significant adherence to the seatbelt mandate across different categories of bus travel.
Specific Requirements for Newer Buses

The mandatory seatbelt requirement applies specifically to drivers and passengers of express and tour buses that were manufactured after January 2020. For buses that were built prior to 2020, operators have been granted a grace period to facilitate the installation of seatbelts. This phased approach acknowledges the practicalities of retrofitting older vehicles.
Penalties for Non-Adherence

Failure to comply with the seatbelt regulations can result in penalties for both individuals and bus companies. Passengers or drivers found not wearing seatbelts may be subject to a RM300 fine. Furthermore, bus companies could face legal repercussions if they do not ensure the safety of their passengers by adhering to these regulations.
