Between March 2020 and November 2021, the United Nations system facilitated the procurement and distribution of approximately 87,000 tonnes of PPE. Further contributing to this issue, over 140 million test kits have been distributed, potentially generating around 2,600 tonnes of non-infectious plastic waste and 731,000 litres of chemical waste. The global administration of the first eight billion Covid-19 vaccine doses alone resulted in an estimated 144,000 tonnes of additional waste, including syringes, needles, and safety boxes. Gloves represent the largest component of PPE waste among items procured by the UN.
Pre-existing Deficiencies in Waste Management

The challenges posed by pandemic-generated waste are exacerbated by pre-existing weaknesses in healthcare waste management. Even before the pandemic, safe management services were inadequate; in 2019, one-third of healthcare facilities worldwide did not manage their waste safely. This deficit was more pronounced in the 46 least-developed countries, where over two-thirds of facilities lacked basic waste management services.
Risks Associated with Poor Waste Management

The improper disposal of healthcare waste carries serious implications. Health workers face potential exposure to needle-stick injuries, burns, and pathogenic microorganisms. Communities living near inadequately managed landfills and waste disposal sites are also at risk from contaminated air resulting from waste incineration, compromised water quality, and the proliferation of disease-carrying pests.
