New services connect smaller airports to overseas markets
MAHB said the four new international services connect Kuala Lumpur with Chongqing and Dalian via Nanjing, while Melaka links to Pekanbaru and Kota Bharu links to Jakarta. These connections expand travel options between Malaysia and two key regional markets, China and Indonesia, through airports outside KLIA.
Melaka and Kota Bharu are now running second international services
MAHB noted that the Pekanbaru route is the second international service for Melaka Airport, and the Jakarta route is the second international service for Sultan Ismail Petra Airport. By adding these second international services, MAHB said the airports are expanding access to overseas markets and creating new opportunities for tourism, trade and business travel.
The routes are tied to specific launch dates and carriers
MAHB said Hainan Airlines started flights between Chongqing and KLIA on May 16, and China Eastern Airlines launched services from Dalian via Nanjing on June 23. In the regional airports network, it said Wings Air introduced thrice-weekly flights between Pekanbaru and Melaka Airport on June 10, while AirAsia launched four-weekly services linking Jakarta and Kelantan’s Sultan Ismail Petra Airport on June 16.
MAHB links the expansion to broader aviation network growth
Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said encouraging growth is taking place across the aviation network. He pointed out that while KLIA continues to expand connections with major international markets, airports such as Melaka and Kota Bharu are also strengthening their international links through these new routes.
