Population size moderates how average wage growth is interpreted
Population size can make average wage growth look more moderate even when some Bumiputera segments are growing faster. Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said wage growth for both Bumiputera and non-Bumiputera workers generally rose by more than five per cent, but the Bumiputera average appeared less steep because the Bumiputera population is much larger. In such cases, the overall average is “moderated by the size of the population”.
Why the Bumiputera average can look more moderate
Dr Mohd Uzir said the increase in average wages is influenced by population composition, not only by wage performance within each segment. Because the Bumiputera population is much larger than the non-Bumiputera population, the overall average wage growth reflects the combined effect across many groups. As a result, faster growth in some Bumiputera segments can be offset when averaged across the larger population.

This monitoring includes wage and other indicators that help interpret changes at the population level.

Dr Mohd Uzir also introduced the subnational indicators portal, which consolidates official data for analysis and monitoring across administrative levels. It integrates data across 1,998 administrative areas, covering 16 states and federal territories, 160 districts, 222 parliamentary constituencies and about 600 state constituencies. The portal includes 22 official datasets across eight domains, updated regularly with metadata to support consistent data definitions, which is relevant when comparing averages across groups of different sizes.
