This new contract officially began on February 4, signalling the restart of work on the Bintulu RTM complex. The Deputy Communications Minister, Teo Nie Ching, confirmed that the project is expected to be completed within 18 months from this new commencement date.
Original Project Delays and Termination
The Bintulu RTM complex project initially started in September 2020 with an anticipated completion date of September 2022. Despite being granted nine extensions of time, the physical progress had only reached 44.1 per cent by the time of the original contractor's default. A notice of default was issued on May 25, 2023, leading to the official termination of the contract with the original contractor on December 4, 2023.
Revised Completion Target
The new contract, with Laras Jaya Construction Sdn Bhd, commenced on February 4, 2024, and is now expected to be completed by August 3, 2027. This revised deadline accommodates the necessary work, which includes proceeding with construction on completed sections and demolishing unsuitable or unsafe parts of the building that were affected by the project's abandonment in 2023.
